Manorlady Premiere: Slow Coast

We’ve been following the progress of Manorlady since 2012, the very year we launched. And it’s been a joy to hear their evolution since we first spun “Lines in the Corner of Your Face” from the Ego Oppressor album. But they’ve been crafting and refining their original take on the sound since 2009, when there wasn’t a lot of love for the genres they champion.

Now they’re preparing for the release of their second full album, No Bitter Ends, on March 29th. Mixed and mastered by Jack Shirley (see also: Balms), it’s the next step in the evolution of Manorlady. And we’re pleased to present what is both the streaming and video premiere of the second single from the album, “Slow Coast”. Part performance video, part travelogue, part impressionistic color blur, it’s a perfect complement for a working band who loves where they live and play. The track itself features several Manorlady signatures: cavernous drumming, unusual choral configurations, and a delicately building guitar churn that is uniquely their own.

We asked Manorlady about how “Slow Coast” came together, both as a song and a video presentation. “Just north of Santa Cruz is the Slow Coast. This stretch of coastline between Santa Cruz and San Francisco hides away a zillion untold secret beach+redwood adventures. Our song Slow Coast is basically our formula for a perfect day in Santa Cruz: (1) beach in morning, (2) redwoods in the afternoon, (3) shoegaze in the evening. The video was shot in July 2018 along the Slow Coast and at a show we played at The Jury Room in Santa Cruz. We hoped to share our joy of the real-life hyper-contrast of a gorgeous Slow Coast day with the rad people who go to loud+weird Santa Cruz rock shows at night.”

No Bitter Ends is released via Part Keeler Recordings on 29 March, in vinyl, CD and digital configurations. Only two upcoming live dates are currently scheduled (Los Angeles and their native Santa Cruz), but expect more announcements as release date nears. Check out the band via their website, and follow their exploits on Facebook and Instagram.
